Wondering around Madrid!
Veganism is becoming more and more popular these days with the numbers of the community growing drastically in the pass few years. Many people turn to a plant based diet for multiple reasons such as preserving the environment. I became vegan only month ago, so Madrid was my first time travelling to a different country and seeing if they had as widely accepted veganism as much England has. After doing some research about Madrid and what they had to offer for people who follow a plant based diet I became optimistic and excited as there was so many fantastic restaurants I wanted to visit and so much different food I wanted to try.
One of the biggest takeaways from this trip is just how fast the vegan movement has grown in Spain and Madrid in general. The friendly people in the restaurant La Encomienda which we visited told us that only 5 years ago there wasn’t any vegans in Madrid with a very small about of people categorising themselves as vegetarians. For some people just the idea of not eating meat was unacceptable and that people wouldn’t understand why people would choose to not eat meat. They also told us in the last 3 years Madrid has started to became one of the most popular city for veganism in Spain. They have lots of cute, little vegan places with friendly people, lovely atmosphere and great food options.
I will list a few of my favourites vegan places we visited in Madrid, hopefully some of these will interest you.
La Encomienda is a vegan / raw food place located in heart of Madrid, this restaurant in-particular stood out offering a unique style, tasty culinary creations made with passion to show vegan cuisine at a highest level. All made with organic products, this restaurant has a truly lovely atmosphere, great food and really friendly staff. The difference between the other vegan places we went to on this trip and this place is that it’s the only vegan place to really accommodate to a raw vegan diet. You can find them on TripAdvisor – La Encomienda! It’s really helpful if you’re travelling and you want to find some great places to visit in your area.
Location : Carrera San Jeronimo 3, 28014 Madrid, Spain
One thing you need to know about me is that I really like burgers. When I decided to make a little list of vegan places I made sure that I would be able to try a burger whilst there. The particular Bacoa burger bar we went to is the one in Sol. For some context about this small burger bar chain it started as a single “hamburguesería” with only 15 seats in Barcelona in 2010, founded by a Australian chef and his Spanish wife. Bacoa is based on two Mediterranean cooking principles: hand-made quality and patience. It is the new generation of fast food. All hand made, quick and tasty.
They also have vegetarian and meat options so everybody can try these delicious burgers.
This cute little place we found was just down the road from the place we were staying in Lavapies. This was my favourite from all of the vegan places we went to, as they had so many different options. The food tasted amazing and every time we ordered they gave us free tapas, how cool is that?! The first time we went to Viva Chapata we got some veggie pizza. One of them was ”Hortelana” with red and green pepper, zucchini, vegan mozarella, tomato sauce and the other one was ”Barbacoa” with vegan cheese, soy, tomato sauce, onion and bell pepper. Both of them tasted really nice.
We went back in the morning to have some of this delicious food for breakfast, I ordered chapata bread with Spanish omelette and salmorejo. My boyfriend ordered chapata bread filled with some veggies, vegan meat and with all of that we also ordered some french fries with vegan cheese.
And the last of my favourite places that we visited in Madrid was a pizza bar. This places wasn’t on our list but we found it while we were wondering around Lavapies, when we saw this place ,we had to go in, because who doesn’t love pizza and specially vegan pizza?! So we ordered some delicious cocktails and great vegan pizza, perfect combination. I would definitely suggest this place to anyone who wants to have a lovely, relaxed dinner with some great food and drink options.
More vegan places around Europe coming soon!
Hope you enjoyed this post. Until next time.
